Is there anything I can do apart from paying to have it overhauled?

Doc, its been in the house longer than I have. No idea what make it is. I suppose I'll have to shell out the fifty quid to have somebody have a look at it.

You need to check a few things.
Make sure oil tank feed filter is not full of crap and partially blocked.
Solenoid is ok (sometimes the Boulter/Worcester type fail intermittently)
Look at how the oil is ignited .. and check that.
Then pump /injector are set correctly (and injector is ok .. may need replacing) They get larger as the HP oil wears away at the jet.
