Have a look inside the cistern. Probably just the hook that connects the handle to the release plunger bit (no doubt Joey will be able to give me the correct names for everything) is broken or has unhooked itself. Does the handle feel loose? You can replace this with a new one or just get a bit of coat hanger to do the job.

If that's not it, let me know and I'll try again.

if handle is working ok then the diaphram has broken.. although they are fairly easy to replace  they  have to be cut to shape and as by now you will have already taken out the syphon just replace it by getting a complete syphon  costing 15 ish..

As dosset says, more likely that the diaphragm is up the creak so you are better off replacing the syphon unit - but give the handle suggestion a try 1st.  Don't forget to turn off the water supply to the cistern, and then scoop or sponge the water out.  Remove the cistern from the WC turn it upside down (ensuring it is empty of water) and the syphon is the big plastic lump of a thing in the middle of the cistern.  Info here...

sorry to hyjack your question brenda but could I ask dosset and octavius if replacing the syphon unit is easy. I have a cistern that is connected to the pan, ie..no joining pipework. How do I tackle this job please
caramba, you need to remove the cistern from pan I'm afraid.

Caramba - this attachment details how to install a WC, but it also shows the components of the cistern etc.  You will need to remove the cistern from the WC(seat/pan) to undo the wingnuts that hold the siphon in place.

I'm still not sure what is needing replaced, the handle is slack and moves about. It flushes some times, is not the hook but feels as if there is no pressure when I pull the handle. I'm a bit wary about removing the cistern from the pan. Does anyone have an idea how much it would cost to get a plumber in for this? (The bathroom suite has only been in for a year but the flush has never really been right.

easily enough to replace the syphon but there will be a cold water feed pipe that will require undoing--no big problem

good luck

It's most likely the flap valve (diaphram) or the piece of plastic beneath it that is damaged. They are part of the syphon unit. I think in this case you'd replace the syphon unit as the flap valve will be hard to find. A new syphon unit will cost about 6, or double that if you're shopping at one of the large DIY stores.
You can buy syphon assemblies which are easy to maintain as you don't have to turn the water supply off. It's worth fitting one of these when you've got your old one off.
brenda, why don't you phone a couple of reputable plumbers from your local directory and ask them to quote over the phone for replacing the syphon in your WC (it is a fairly basic job to them so they should be able to advise you accurately).  Either that or start offering cups of tea to a friendly and neighbourly handy man!!
