toilet cistern problem

hi, my toilet will only flush now and then. I've noticed that as the cistern is attempting to fill up with water after the flush, the water is still trickling into and down the toilet pan from the cistern, hence the cistern does not fill up properly/quickly and isn't ready to flush again for hours on end. Is this something that can be fixed, or do I need a new cistern ? (It is a modern push button flush, not a handle with a ball ****). Thanks

Asked hubby - he thinks there may be dirt insiide inlet valve on cold water fill inside cistern. Clean it out, ( valve will have to be took out for this) and it should be ok. You should not need a new cistern, it will a minor problem.

If you are not sure how to do this, a local DIY store would explain.

Or the other option is.....after you have flushed, when the water starts to trickle down down the pan, push the button a few times and it may stop, I know this because my toilet does the same but I`m moving in a few weeks so Im not that worried about it
if you have a modern push button, is it cable operated? if so you may find that the cable could be bent holding the seal off the sealing face hence the waters continual flow into the pan, if the filling valve is filling at a rate slower than it is emptying then the flow in needs to be increased.ultimately the drop valve is not sealing correctly, check for debris under the seal/
