It sounds like you may be better leaving it well alone!! if you have removed the burn, messing about with fillers could just make it 10 times worse, throw a rug over it!!

the burn is about half an inch deep and about the size of a saucer. it was falling out and covering the flat in charcoal.

i will probably try to get a pine coluored filler and then sand it back and stain it (would this work??)
I don't think a lump of filler that size would stay in place, could you possibly swap that floorboard with a less noticeable one? a patch of filler will show as badly as the burn I expect, filling large areas is an expensive highly specialised job. Good luck!!
When you say pine floor, do you mean the traditional 3/4" thick t&g floor boards, or are you reffering to a pine effect laminate? If they are propper boards, as joiner I would carefully cut the damaged section of the wood out , splice & glue a new piece in, and then carefully sand it down with a sanding block and finally rub some matching stain into it with a cloth. In some curcumstances it would be neccessary to sand and re-finish the whole floor.
A french polisher may be able to do an invisible mend for you,
