As far as I know, it is usually after flowering. Also with this plant, you sometimes get long water shoots coming up, these should be cut off down to the ground whenever they appear.

you should not need to prune it other than a light trim to retain shape if you feel it needs it. Best trimmed either early spring or late autumn after flowering. Spring would be best as it has fantastic autumn colour which you would not want to cut out.
