my plant has fab leaves but is staggly .... can i hard prune this .... assume that means cutting into the old wood

I've just checked in my 'Flowering shrub expert' book, as I had an idea that they need special treatment, and it states :- Pruning not necessary- remove unwanted branches in late winter and dead flowers in May.
So I'd hang back for now.
