Several years ago I laid my winding garden path of one small slab four house bricks, this combo was repeated to the end.But as was expected the grass grew between the earth joints I've tried conventional garden tools like a hoe or spade but it's not very easy or successful.Has anyone a tool of their own that they made that would do this job without too much physical effort? I don't want to use a weed killer because when the grass is trimmed neatly it gives the garden a "country look"

Do you want to keep the grass short or remove it entirely?
You can now buy a tool which is designed for this, at most garden centres and diy stores about £10.
they are a broom handle length pole with a narrow strong wire brush at the business end.
Works well on my patio.

I just want to KEEP the grass as short and tidy as possible. Thanks for both of your replies.
in that case, run a mower over it with the blade set low,or use a strimmer.

Over the years the path has got a bit uneven so a mower would be out of the question but I'll give your strimmer idea a go. Thanks !!
The method used and preferred by garden presenter Monty Don is a flame gun, apparently if you weaken the the part of the plant above ground it will also weaken the root.
The one I saw him use looked very industrial and not the type with a small gas cylinder that will go out with the slightest breeze!

I agree with woofgang and find a strimmer the most suitable tool for the job!
Be prepared to replace the cord regularley, as it will wear down fast!
I invested in a conversion kit for my strimmer which saves me fiddling about with a spool. I just cut lengths of about 8" and plug them into the head. I bought that about 5 years ago and it's saved me a lot of time, money well spent!
