if you are in the UK then pathclear which has a residual effect to stop seeds germinating then lay a weed proof membrane
I've always used Pathclear to good effect. However it can't stop newly blown seeds of weeds landing and germinating. However, for the odd new weed I use one of those heat wands (like a blow torch on a long tube). Very effective. I also use it to rid my patio of ants nests underneath - just aim the flame down into the hole created by the ants when they burrow and it will quickly kill the ants inside. I don't like using powders in case they are slow acting. Much as I hate killing things my patio is gradually sinking, and I have to save it!
I've got one of those wands too, great fun to use, if you lay weed membrane mind you don't melt it
Jeyes fluid, the one in the tin is effective for about 6 months
