Replacement Shrub

ouch, have just come inside from lopping down a huge ceanothus bush which was dreadfully in the way of a rotten fence panel which we will be getting replaced in a couple of weeks' time. We had to lop the ceanothus otherwise we wouldn't get the new fence panel in, the bush was just in the way.

To cut a long story short, we really want the ceanothus bush to die off, so we can replace it with something a little less large and not quite so quick-growing. Can anyone recommend something (that won't grow quite so quickly) and something which isn't so tall - the ceanothus just got too big.

Hope someone can help, many thanks, Chox.

What about a Fatsia Japonica. Exotic, evergreen leaves, hard as nails, can tolerate pruning hard and just look superb.
A shrub with good all year round interest is Enkianthus perularius which is a medium size shrub up to about 5ft.

For something much smaller you may consider Escalonia rubra 'woodside' which will only grow to about 1& 1/2ft
Choisya, skimmia, the three shrubs in the front garden that have flowers and colour through out the year and whose name I can't remember for the life of me...... I'll get back to you when I've remembered......
Any of the hebe family would be ideal. The leaves are decorative on their own but when in flower that look even better.
