toilet seat fittings

The thread of the plastic/nylon nut which fixes the screw to the underside of the toilet fitting has worn away. At present I am using a metal screw but worry that it will bind with rust to the screw (the flush sometimes splashes over the back and the screws are already rusty). I can only find a full set of fittings in the d.i.y stores at a cost of 10 - crazy when all I need is a couple of 8 mm nuts. Can anyone help please? I wouldn't mind replacing the screws as well, but that's not essential.

nip to IKEA if there`s one local to you complete wooden seat`s are only 4 quid
I had a similar problem the other week. In the end I bought some long screws and wing nuts. Both were zinc plated steel. I chopped the heads off the screws, cutting them down to the right length. I bought them at my local B & Q store and they only cost about 2.

I tried this before and the wing nuts made it a lot easier to undo them in the future.
Wingnuts are a good idea, but I think even plated steel will corrode. If you can find some brass wingnuts, that'd be perfect. New toilet seats always seem to have steel screws holding the hinge to the seats -- I replace these with brass when they are new and will still come out.

Thanks to teash, Wraith and New Forester. If I can find brass wing nuts and screws, then that's what I'll do, otherwise I'll look at Ikea. I'd like to keep the loo seat I've got because it looks good and is very comfortable.
