Question Author
Thanks both. Don't think Haff is right because i am sure 31dn is algarroba, making my a correct. If ard plough then was does that make 7dn for which i have A Posteriori.
What are the clues for those other two.
Question Author
7dn Empirically(1,10)
31dn The carob or mesquite(9)
haff= a long shallow lagoon separated from the open sea by a narrow sand bar or barrier beach. [Merriam Webster dictionary]
Question Author
Mamyalynne,if you agree with algarroba then the a is not in the right place.
So are we saying if Haff is correct then it starts 'F'?
Question Author

A real puzzler then, will keep thinking.
Question Author
From the definition Haff certainly does look right.

I was thinking that slaney - I fairly sure that 31d is algarroba.

Thanks everyone for your efforts and answers.
I too have spent ages puzzling this one. The only light I have found is in the Dictionary of Ichthyology (???) where "haff" and "haaf" seem to be used as alternative spellings of each other.
I have just discovered that "haaf" is old Norse for "sea" or "channel". Seems like it could be adapted to mean the definition in 30ac doesn't it? Or am i pushing that logic too far? Anyway back to revision...
