LXXVII.....is 77
What's the point in asking a question than answering it yourself? And if you are going to do something that daft, t least learn now to spell the word numeral.

MCMLXXVII
I IX VII VII
Three errors in 2 lines, Spellmaster? Are you going for some sort of record?
Sigh, how many times do I have to explain, Quizmonster? For the umpteenth time, I accept that everyone, myself included, makes spelling mistakes, which is why I generally do not correct them when they appear. I concentrate on the mis-use of Americanisms (as in program/programme), and the appalling mis-use of the apostrophe (as in "for sale: rabbit's). The only other spelling mistakes I correct are blatantly awful ones, such as interergate. Satisfied? I seem to have made this point more often than people have asked about Dale Winton's 'wedding', but some people, it seems, are incapable of grasping this very simple point.
So, Spellmaster, you feel entitled to sigh resignedly when your errors are pointed out, yet - when you point out the errors of others - they are supposed to go away thinking: "Wonderful! I've really learned something today." Is that it? So, why can't you do that, too?

Don't you think that someone who sets himself up as a self-appointed arbiter of linguistic correctness should be - like Csar's wife in the old quotation - "above suspicion" - in language-use terms?

I can see no element of Americanisation or 'apostrophic' error in the mis-spelling 'ment', which you recently pointed out to a questioner should be 'meant'. Was that mistake any worse than your use of 'than' when you clearly intended 'then'?

Try printing out in large letters Juvenal's immortal quote: "Quis custodiet ipsos custodies?"...Who guards the guards themselves?..and stick it up prominently by your monitor. If you're to be the 'guardian', then you need watching, mate!

The difference in the example you quote, QM, was the the person used the word 'ment' several times, suggesting it was not an ordinary typo but how they genuinely thought the word was spelt. It never ceases to amaze me how people in this country are so happy to accept sloppiness, ignorance and quite woeful standards, and I would have expected better of you my friend.
kenny-g - just to confirm that you were right LXXVII is indeed 77 (it appears some of the subsequent answers thought you were answering the whole thing), and that j2buttonsw is correct in answering your question: 1977 is MCMLXXVII.
Can I just say QM that (please don't panic) I am TOTALLY with you on this one?
"Oh, my God!" (Stage direction:Flutters off frantically, heart pitter-pattering desperately, before creeping back towards computer and gazing at monitor from behind high-backed chair.) "It's Comloulou!"

Just having a laugh, Comloulou. It's good to see you again. I'm glad you agree, too.

Er, Spellmaster, do your duties include checking the 'mis-use' of hyphens or would that be a misuse of your time? I only ask because of the use of one in somebody's post above. It's MCMLXXVII.
