This is a tough one - and I'm still working on it. So far, I've been able to find only a few merchant figures - with the help of John Slader's book: 'The Fourth Service: Merchantmen at War 1939-1945' (Robert Hale, London, 1994). He says 1,565 merchant ships were lost in the Second World War - a total of 25,864 lives. A total of 7,983,092 tons of merchant shipping were lost. More details when I get them.
