I am partiicularly interested in US history for the period after 1865 to 1910. Can anyone recommend any books for this period understandable by a layman. I have trolled library lists and googled but a couple of pointers/recommendations would be very useful.

There's a great book on American history called The Enduring Vision. It covers all American history, rather than just the period you want, but is very comprehensive so I'm sure will have stuff to interest you.

Many thanks robbo82, I'll follow up on that one and start googling.
Read "Bury my heart at wounded knee" for a Native American history that's very readable.

Thanks noxlumos, I really am looking for a broader overview of US history of that time. Among the reasons I find the 1865 -1910 period so absorbing is that so much happened in such a short time frame. The westward expansion, booming industries, the robber barons and cartels, suppression of the native Americans, Panama Canal, and so on. It seems to be the era of rapid expansion and consolidation all in one. Mind you, not too sure what's happened since!!

Im in college in the states and my friends are doing U.S. History after 1877, the book they are using is called A Brief American Pageant after 1877, if that is any help

Many thanks mudbug162, I have found 'The American Pageant after 1865' via google, Amazon. It does not appear to be readily available in the UK and, looks as if needs to be ordered in advance in the US. With its accompanying info. it may be a text book. I am pursuing robbo82 thread which seems more readily to hand. Thanks for your interest.
I am selling two American history books on e-bay one is The Enduring Vision Vol 1 to 1877 and the other is America - a narrative history. Why not try and bid. They are both in excellent condition and belonged to my daughter. She didn't use the books (both new) as she changed her course at Uni.

Sorry just realised the Enduring Vision book is too early for you.

The other one, however, is quite comprehensive.

Thanks for that information Janbuck, I did have a look on e-bay but no luck in finding your items, what section are they placed in? I was looking in the UK e-bay, whether that makes any difference I'm not too sure, depends where you live I suppose. I'll keep looking!!
