The rules for selection of monarchs varies from country to country. In constitutional monarchies the rule of succession is generally embodied in a law passed by a representative body, such as a parliament.

The order of succession in most European monarchical states of the 21st century is by primogeniture, meaning the eldest son of the monarch is first in line, then his brothers, then female siblings in order of age. Succession then follows the descendants of the person in line before going on to other siblings. Sons are always considered before daughters, but daughters are included. Princess Beatrice (then Eugenie) would come after Charlie, Willy, Harry and Andy, but before Eddy.

In 1960 the Q & DofE decided that they would like their own direct descendants to be distinguished from the rest of the Royal Family (without changing the name of the Royal House), as Windsor is the surname used by all the male and unmarried female descendants of George V. All the princes, including William & Harry are Mountbatten-Windsor. Both Willy & Harry have used "Wales" as a surname during school. At Sandhurst, Harry was known as Officer Cadet Wales. Beatrice & Eugenie of York both use "York" as a last name.

Edward has styled himself "Edward Wessex" for his tv series since acquiring the title Earl of Wessex upon his marriage. Before that he was "Edward Windsor."

The names of dynasties tended to change when the line of succession was taken by a rival faction within the family (Lancastrians, Yorkists, and Tudors), or when succession passed to a different family branch through females (e.g.Angevins, Stuarts, and Hanoverians). Unless Charlie chooses to alter the present decisions when he becomes king, he will continue to be of the House of Windsor and his grandchildren will use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.
