Two new hedgehogs tonight (both in the feeder at the same time), now up to seven different ones that we’ve actually seen - can too many hedgehogs be a problem? The grass is already ropey from them rooting around and I’m happy to buy them their food. I’m wondering how many come and visit when we’re not looking.

How lovely for you Sher, they know they are on to a good thing.

I’m thinking of getting another feeder because they are eating all the food I put out so I’m a bit concerned that some of them are going hungry - or maybe I’ll get a deeper dish :)

Have a chat with Waterboatman, he has Hedgehogs as well.
I had a frisson of panic then, thought it said 'Hotpot'.

I’ve worked it out - my garden is a hedgehog knocking shop. One has just run down the garden making a hell of a noise and another has come out of the feeding station and given him a ‘look’ and the little one has run off.

Wot, no bonking?
Can I have a couple, building a wild life garden and we don't have many of them round here. Love hedgies
wished we had some but the badgers have eaten all the ones in our garden. We have a sett up the top and there is another one in the field nearby and goodness only knows how many more are around. Haven't seen a hedgehog since we moved here.
Do you have an open garden ie how are they getting in to your garden? Does it back onto fields etc? I’d love hedgehogs in my garden but that’s never going to happen where I live.
Badgers are indeed bad news for hedgehogs. I've got a pair of hedgies in Tiggy Towers, and at least another four in the back hedge They are thriving!
hi Smow - our cottage and garden are in the middle of a farm and we are surrounded by open fields and woodland. too many setts to have any hope of ever seeing them. the badgers have even broken through wire netting into our fruit cage to get at things growing there. have two layers in place now. between them and the rabbits it is quite a battle.
Never ending LJ!
Sounds a lovely area. Sadly my little dpgqrden is just patio and decking, which then backs onto another road(well a close actually) so not a bit of greenery in sight, although just up the road it’s all fields. When I was a child we had the option of looking after a hedgehog for the winter or when it was hibernating, and I fell in love with my one.
*garden
you're so right there Boaty. it seems like a never-ending battle.
Most winters I have one or two hibernating hedgies in the shed, there is a wee gap for them to come and go as they wish.
Rabbits and badgers are so destructive.
yes, we are lucky as it is quite nice but hard work. we have had badgers nosing around the front door and the back one, foxes sunning themselves on the side grass and rabbits just everywhere. I do intentionally feed any of them. they are just very bold. just like the rooks and seagulls.
My garden backs onto the shed of the last house in the close behind, and there is often a fox sunbathing on the roof lol.
It obviously feels at home there smow!
