Ok I'll be the boring one and post a (semi) realistic answer.

There is precident in most cultures for belief in pre-historic or mythological beasts living in large lakes, so Nessie is far from unique. I do believe that there originally was *something* there (remember that people used to be scathing of folk tales of hairy elephants until someone fell over a mammoth's remains). Certainly the descriptions are all very similar, which implies their validity. I doubt though that any such creatures are alive today, as with all the interest in finding them one would have turned up somewhere by now. That doesn't detract however from the fun I used to have scouring Loch Ness for the beastie.

An exhaustive scientific sonar survey of the loch has been carried out and nothing out-of-ordinary was found, The analogy with mammoths is disingenuous.

Went on the Caledonian Canal for a holiday. Pretty boring. But we did see the Loch Ness Monster. OK he /she was disguised as a log. But , we took care to steer round him'her.

Personnally I'd like to but don't really. But having had a long conversation with a guy who does regular boat trips over the loch and has an echo locator fitted to the boat (even he only saw something once, on the locator but it was big) I'm prepared to upgrade to sceptical. By the way I thought that the Mammoth refference was quite a good one.

It is a an old German U-Boat that got trapped in Loch Ness in the Second World War. They don't know that the war is over yet.
In the recent sightings, you can just make out a bent periscope, probably bent when they first entered the loch. There is some credibility to this as they would need to surface to check for enemy shipping. Hope this helps.
