There’s a few springing up in and around Tyneside, mostly young people doing shopping and checking the needs of older ones, I’d imagine it must have been like this during the war years too

We have local people offering to help those who need it. We have a very good friend who now has to work from home, he has kindly offered to get shopping for us. There are some genuinely good people out there.

i thought everyone was selfish *** yesterday?
A younger lady (60) has just rung me to say that she will get any shopping I need. Such a lovely, warm feeling I've got now, so kind and thoughtful of her. I've always been the one doing the looking-after of others. Unfortunately, most of us 'looker-afters' are 70 or over.

By the way, just heard that Iceland is opening it's stores 8 - 9 a.m. exclusively for older people. What a good idea, hope it catches on.

I stand by what I said, people who are clearing supermarkets shelves for the hell of it is hardly the same as those visiting people and offering help!!!
Question Author
Yes jourdain I heard that too
^^^and I don't think that people are clearing supermarket shelves "for the hell of it"....
Question Author
And I’m refusing to be pulled into an argument, I’ve my opinion and you have yours!!
//^^^and I don't think that people are clearing supermarket shelves "for the hell of it".... //

No. They're doing it because they're selfish.
Question Author
I think so and said as much Naomi
While it's great that some are volunteering to shop for the elderly, I would advise our senior citizens to beware. Story from the evening standard on MSN about lowlifes offering this service then stealing the money handed to them for the shopping.
Question Author
It’s always going to happen Ken, sad but true, I think the groups that have sprung up all have legit IDs they use
^^if the supermarket shelves were empty because one or two people had cleared them, I would agree with the "selfish" label. But lots and lots of people are buying extra in case they are unable to shop for some time...I'd call that "sensible".
And, I think that those who label others as "selfish", "idiots" and "morons" are just miffed that they didn't get there first!
Question Author
And I’ve never used the latter two terms!!!
^^no, but others on here have....!
Buying extra is hardly the same as greedily shoving nearly a shelf full into a basket and pushing people aside, which seems to have happened! I bought extra household essentials. and non-perishable food (where I could!)last week when I heard of plans to self-isolate.
Its perishable food that I am bit worried about.
//I think that those who label others as "selfish", "idiots" and "morons" are just miffed that they didn't get there first! //

You'd be wrong then. I've bought only what I need and no more than I'd buy at any other time.
Naomi, If we weren't in the vulnerable group I would have done the same. Basically I doubled up but there were no loo rolls in sight! And no gluten free pasta which I really do need.
apc, I understand that but the people who are clearing the shelves aren't just doubling up. They're taking all they can get.

Do you have a farm shop near you? They might have the pasta you need ... it'll be more expensive though. Most things they sell are more expensive - which is probably why they still have stock. That said, I've just been to my local farm shop and even some of their shelves are a bit sparse.
apc,Have you thought about buying your gluten free pasta on line?
The following do a good variety of gluten free pasts etc.
