Hello

Can anyone tell me please? I have just received a copy of my Father's birth certificate, and for his father's occupation, it says Hosiery Brusher - can anyone tell me what this was please? This was in 1915.

Thank you

I've searched the internet and the only reference I can find is - Mary CAHEY W 44 F Inmate Hosiery Brusher Nottingham - an inmate of a workhouse in Nottingham in 1881.
Did your father come from the Nottingham area? Nottingham & Leicester were the main areas for production of hosiery (ie socks, silk stockings).

You may get help & information from museums in the area.

Hello

Thank you for your very quick reply! Yes, that was all I could find also, but hadn't thought of trying the museums in the area - yes, my father was born in Nottingham, and I was born and lived there till I was 10 also. I had also thought of trying the V&A museum too, as they have a very big costume section. Thanks for your help.
Below is a link to a Professor Chris Wrigley at Nottingham University who has written a history of hosiery manufacturing in the area. His email address is given and if send him an email with your question, he may be able to help.
