Naaaa, it'd be a major financial blow but it wouldn't kill Sony.
They have their fingers in too many pies for any one failure to take down the entire company even one as big as the PS3.
This is true altho the guy in charge of this particular division got the flick. It is a major gamble as of the 3 current gen consoles, they are selling each one at a major loss.
The Ps3 must be one of their biggest mistakes to date. I mean, Who in their right mind would want to pay 400 - 500 for a games console, when You could pay 180 for a Wii, which has so many advantages over it! and if theyre looking for an old fashioned console, with great graphics, theyll go for an Xbox 360. I honeslty think Sony would be more profitable if they developed software, and not gaming hardware.
Besides, i do remember reading an article that they don't plan on making a 'PS4'. Sorry, i dont have a source for this, but im sure it'll be on IGn or the bbc or something.
dr mario, altho i understand what you are trying to say,the 360 is hardly 'old fashioned' is it ?
People will pay the money for 3 reasons :-

1 They want the blu-ray functionality.
2 They love sony so would buy one regardless.
3 they just want one as they have fallen for the hype.

so many 'experts' are biased towards it also and no doubt the gaming shops will shuffle the 360 displays back in their shops just like they used to with the xbox...its no wonder the ps2 won the last round so convincingly !
Mattk, 2 out of the 3 reasons you mention are based on the assumption that people are stupid...
and it's true that sometimes they are...

but considering the slow sales of PS3 in Japan and U.S. , it seems that the price has reached a height that makes people think before buying.
Also, the "hype" is not on the PS3 right now. It is somewhere else.
So your predictions might not be as certain as you pretend they are.
