I have bought my son a gameboy advance and ime not sure which games to buy. some of them say gameboy advance sp. is this for a different system or will they work on mine?

The Gameboy Advance SP is a different system yes. The one youve bought your son is a rectangler one, the SP is more of a square, and is a clamshell style.

Both systems use the same cartridges though.
