How is it easy checked out when it's not always labelled?
You ask.
I don`t think slitting an animal`s throat is a quick death. I come from a farming community and my family were farmers for 400 years in the same village but I can still remember going to my friend`s farm when I was about 7 or 8. Her dad had decided to slaughter some chickens. He tied them upside down from their legs from the washing line and slit their throats. They had been there for quite a few minutes and they were struggling. Her dad said it was just a reflex action but even though I was a kid I could see that wasn`t the case. They were trying to bring their heads up to their feet as if to free themselves. It was quite disturbing and I can still see that image in my mind.
Halal, Im not even sure we would know what that is here ion Devon lol

Halal Butcher!! I think it would be laughed out of the county.

I'm sure they said on 'kill it, cook it, eat it' that it was a reflex action.
lol, sorry ummmm, didn't mean to come across as particularly grumpy xxx

I'm always been passionate about animal walfare, and in conversations like this, i do tend to let my heart do my talking for me.
You might be surprised Ratter, our butcher here imports his halal chicken breasts from Holland, they don't have to be local!
I lived in Cyprus till I was 3 and one of the very few things I remember was my grandmother cutting the head off a chicken. Unfortunately, it got away and started running around the garden but, being 3 years old I didn't think anything of it until much much later.

I don't agree with Halal meat but I've probably eaten loads of it in takeaways.

I know BOO.....I was just covering my back :-)
It's a very emotive argument. My OH and I are both very much animal lovers and we have differing opinions on this. I used to think that halal was horrendous. Truthfully, now I just don't know what to think. My OH believes it is quicker and kinder to the animal (and he is as soft as me when it comes to animals).

I saw a programme on the BBC, undercover reporters in an abattoir, a slaughterman was clearly heard saying the stun gun was a waste of time as it didn't work most of the time. That makes me think that even some who believe in stunning, aren't that bothered about animal suffering.

Take a look at this thread, I found the comments from a retired Food Inspector interesting.

(Sorry ummmm ... in answer to your question - I've never shopped in a halal butchers but I have noticed one in a local shopping street, claiming that their meat is much cheaper than other outlets. I tend to go the other way and pay more for the meat, in the hope that the animal has had a decent life and quick death).
Ummm a reflex action doesn`t last that long and it is normally just twitching, not a response in the way that those chickens were displaying.
If you read Mrs Chappies article boxy....the Dutch chickens are halal - doubtful !
Where I live there are about 5 or 6 Halal butchers/grocers. The only non-Halal meat is from my local Tesco.
But there would so little demand here in Devon, we do have a very small ethnic population down yer in the countryside you knows.

I'm sure it available, I have just never seen it on sale.
Fair enough ratter, but it's defo halal, it says so on the box.
You might have some converts ratter, I know a Muslim convert who lives in the depths of Cornwall, and certainly some in Plymouth.

Cheers Mrs C...will read in a bit but I think I remember it.

I must add though...tonight I cooked a veggie curry. The big boys had a taste before they toddled off to watch the footie. Nephew was well impressed. The little boys went back for seconds...they would have had more if the big boys had already eaten theirs.

The point I've been trying to make to them for months is that veggie food can be really tasty. I didn't eat meat until into my early 20's and that was only because I cooked it for the family.
Well I think humans are hunter gatherers and we are meant to eat a little bit of everything. The upshot is killing animals for food is always distressing. It doesn`t matter how you dress up the issue, it is not pleasant. Even though my family were farmers I would have been a useless farmer if I had followed the family trade. A farmer can only look after his animals in the best way he can as my grandfather did but at the end of the day they are going to be killed. Doing that in a humane way is the best possible outcome in my book.
