i wasn't patronising you or anyone else, BOO, i wouldn't do that, maybe it was the way i worded it or maybe it was the way you read it. just pointing out that there are a lot of misconceptions about lots of things and if someone is going to object to something then they owe it to themselves to find out exactly what it is they're objecting to. personally i really don't care whether or not anyone eats halal meat and wonder how anyone can actually know if they are if they buy take-aways or eat in ethnic restaurants.
Yes, ummm - you will probably be surprised that much of the chicken on sale in any butchers is halal anyway. We needed some halal chicken for Muslim friends and our butcher was very surprised to see on the boxes which he'd been buying for ages, that his daily purchases were indeed halal. A percentage of meat and poultry sold in the main supermarkets is often halal too. It's much more prevalent than people realise, and it tastes fine.
It was the way you mentioned "educating" us Ethandron, afraid It came across, to me anyway, very patronising.

As my link backs up my theory and belief why I object to Halal meat, I think i'll stick with it thanks ;-)
Halal butchers dont do pork. The lamb is often skinned, not good for a crispy crunchy roast leg.
there are always two sides to an argument ;)
Boxtops my objection has nothing to do with the way it tastes but the method of its death. I am an animal lover that's why I won't eat Halal meat. And of course the powers that be are going to defend it because it is the cheapest way of killing the animal. If they can kill twice as many an hour because they don't bother to stun them then they make more money which as usual is at the bottom of it. In a compassionate society why wouldn't you stun the animal first if you could and personally if it costs more I would pay it but eat meat less often. Halal is a backward step in animal welfare. And we call ourselves animal lovers.
Halal is to bleed the beast by cutting the jugular. Farmed chickens have their necks snapped not snipped and are not bled. Their heads are chopped off after death and before feathering; that's not halal.
nicely put ladybirder, totally agree 100% with your sentiments.
I don't dispute your sentiments, ladybirder, but as ethanron's link shows, many halal butchers do indeed stun before death. I'm not in any way trying to defend it, but the films I've seen about killing in "normal" abbatoirs look pretty unpleasant too, with animals panicking. I don't mind which I buy, this is my personal opinion - any death of any animal is unpleasant, but I'm not getting into an argument about method here. I know what you mean.
I don`t have a huge problem with people eating halal for religious reasons but I wouldn`t choose halal if I had any say in the matter. Sometimes I have to eat it. I have no choice. My issue is that halal food should be marked as such so that people can have an informed choice about whether they eat it or not. I think halal slaughtering is not the most humane way and I don`t want to see it slipped into the food chain surreptitiously so that it becomes the norm.
There have been many discussions about the halal method of slaughter on AB.

I remember reading this article, someone had posted the link, which claims that the halal method does involve stunning, albeit very briefly (5 seconds).

B00 - nice to get the support. Thank you.
Boxtops, agree the whole thing is unpleasant, Halal or not. Regarding some animals being stunned, I wouldn't know which has and which hasn't so wouldn't buy.
237SJ - I fear it has already become the norm. I believe that's why the supermarkets won't label it as Halal because then people would realise how widespread it is. And of course not all would avoid it but many would.
I'd like to see men hold down an angus bullock to cut its throat......no chance !
So would I tambourine. I've yet to see beef on a list of Halal meat.

I would prefer for any animal I ate to be killed humanly. I don't think slitting their throats is that inhumane though. It's still a quick death...
A friend sent me this. Some people might find it interesting. Hope it's going to work.

And you think they are telling the truth...?
Any reason why they should lie?
Wouldn't they have the supermarket on their case pretty quickly if they were? It's easily checked out anyway.
Question Author
Yeah...people might shop elsewhere.

Like someone mentioned earlier....do you eat takeaways?

And BOO...I do respect your stance (I felt I had to add that as I know that giving up smoking makes people super duper grumpy x)
