With the state of the pavements in our towns and cities due to the snow, don't you think that all the unemployed should be put to work clearing them?

No. If they slipped they would sue the council for compensation. The insurance would be massive.
People who are employed to do this sort of work would be made redundant.
what about if they were to work for charties - fund raisng, in shops etc?
As long as they were still available for work, that would be fine, and many unemployed people do do voluntary work.
According to the Mail they get so much in benefits they wouldn't have time, with all the shopping they need to do, for work, voluntary or otherwise.
No I don't think so ,not for a moment. There are many people out of work at the moment through no fault of their own. Cleaning and clearing up is one of the favourite tasks for those undergoing a Community Service Order because they have broken the law. In my view it is totally wrong to lump the unemployed togetherand to suggest that this is all they are fit for ,now they have lost their job.Shame on you shaking for even thinking like this.Brenda.
I agree with Brenda.

I know there are people out there who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own but there are many out there who won't work. Perhaps those of you who object are in this category.
Making unemployed people work takes paid jobs away from people. Why should the councils pay proper wages for manual / unskilled labour if they can get somebody on the dole to do it?
I agree with your sentiments and they could be made to other jobs.
They could even run a scheme say:

For every £5 or allowance they receive they have to contribute 1 hour of working time on a local project

Not to much to ask is it?
You cheeky funking sod!
And how, exactly, will you differentiate between the two when you are forcibly handing out your shovels ?

I wouldn't penalise anyone for being unemployed, but I am a great believer in you should earn your keep.
