It's nice.  Try it.
I like most food, but I cannot stand Sushi - only had it the once, I bought some in Selfridges Food Hall when I was in London for a day. The amount of raw fish is quite small, it is padded out with rice which is soaked in some sort of vinegary stuff which is what I didn't like - I probably would have liked the fish
You can get sushi boxes for between two and three pounds from places like Tesco and Marks & Spencer. They'll give you an idea for minimal outlay.
The stuff from Tesco and the like is a poor imitation of sushi, normally made with smoked salmon or a crab strick rather than fresh frish as it keeps for longer, sushi has a very limited shelf life. Thats not to say don't try it just don't think that this is what sushi is really like. The only way to get decent sushi is to go to a sushi bar like Yo Sushi, You can get 'normal food' there also so if you tried it and didn't like it you could get something else. Central London Sainsburys used to sell pre packed Yo Sushi stuff which was as close as you could get to real decent sushi in a shop.
As for what its like.... we its raw fish but its so fresh it doesn't taste at all fishy, I suppose smoked salmon would be the nearest equivalent. There are lots of different types, sushi which is raw fish with rice, sashimi which is raw fish on its own. Traditional rolls which is fish rolled in rice and rapped in seaweed, californian rolls which don't have seaweed and have a mixture in the middle, nigiri which is slices of raw fish on a block of rice and maki which is like a wrap made of seaweed and filled with what ever you fancy. I love it but thats me.
The rice is cooked and then rice wine vinegar is added,  but I have never tasted the vinegar in it.

Oh, sushi is one of my favorite foods ever.  It's so great!  Don't buy the supermarket version - go to a sushi bar.  And with sushi bars, it is true that you absolutely get what you pay for, so go to one that is a little more expensive, just for the experience.

The rice is warm and a little bit sweet.  The fish is really as much a textural experience as a taste experience.  My favorites are tuna nigiri and hamachi nigiri - the nigiri sushi are rice underneath with a piece of fish on top.  The fish just melts in your mouth.  It is a very satisfying taste, and definitely most of it doesn't taste "fishy".  Start with tuna or hamachi, or unagi (which is cooked) - they are the easiest on the palate if you are not used to sushi.

Then there's the wasabi (Japanese horseradish) - you mix a little wasabi with soy sauce, and dip the sushi in, fish side down, and eat it - follow with a bite of pickled ginger.  Oh, the idea of it is making me crave sushi!

Sainsbury's do a nice sushi pack. The small sushi is about 1.99 and the larger one is 3.50. It is not raw fish at all, but smoked fish or prawns or rice wrapped in a very tasty and tender seaweed which is like spinach. The sushi comes with soy sauce and ginger or Japanese green mustard which you can add to taste. It is delicious and you should try it.

Japanese people are typically a lot more heathly than other nationalities, largely because of diet.  I used to be very faddy, but now eat Japanese twice a week.  The sushi is great, but sashimi (seafood on rice, instead of in rice) is great.  Tuna is ultra safe, and my favourite.  To be honest, you cannot tell it is raw by the texture.  The only hint is it is cold.

For sushi (and sashimi) freshness is critical.

If you are in or near london Itsu (chain) is far better than Yo Sushi - salmon sashimi to die for - very tender and buttery. Conveyor belt too so you see what you get!

The best raw fish in my opinion ( and I see I'm not alone on that one ) is tuna.
Unfortunately, the poor imitations of sushi you find in this country usually don't have any tuna !
Sometimes they even put cooked tuna... idiots...

You can find some proper sushi at Yo Sushi, But it is an expensive place.

Raw tuna melts in the mouth and has a lovely fresh taste, and it doesnt feel as greasy as raw salmon. It doesnt smell neither.

It has a dark red colour. You can find raw "tuna steaks" in most supermarkets.

The soy sauce and the wasabi are a nice addition, but if you put too much you won't taste the fish.
