Please can someone tell me how long does fresh ginger and garlic last? How long can you keep them for before you should throw it out.

Thanks

hi steffiy, ginger tends to go a bit soft.and when you see once you have peeled  it little bits of grey or brown on garlic its time to throw it.best to buy just a clove or to at a time and a small bit of ginger.

You can buy them in larger quantities and keep them in dark, dry places (like a cupboard) and it will keep longer.

I usually buy a small chunk of ginger at a time, but a few heads of garlic (I make sure they are very firm when I buy them) and store it away from the light, because I hate to run out.

Peel root ginger and cut it into chunks (about an inch) and store it in the fridge, in a screw topped jar, covered in sherry. It lasts for ages and is perfect for chinese cooking. As for garlic - I just keep it in the fridge, but I use it pretty much every day so it never lasts long anyway!
I've heard that if you keep fresh ginger in a pot of sand (effectively planting it), it starts to grow. I've never tried it - does anyone else know? (Or was someone winding me up?!)
One other thing: get hold of some smoked garlic - it lasts for ages, and adds an extra flavour when cooking.

Will try the smoked garlic sounds lush! No idea about the sand though sorry. :)
