A good pate, french toast and mixed salad leaves.
I know you said not hot but how about a soup, you can make that a day or two in advance and just heat it on the hob. Otherwise maybe a cold cheese tart with salad or a really seasonal fruit salad?
Melon balls with grapes is a good starter.
Melon balls and cherries.
snap cherrybea.
:-)
melon balls with grapes and cherries and creme de menthe

(sorry thought we were playing a game)

How about soem smoked salmon? or wil the kids not be too impressed?
You could do pate (and Philadelphia cheese if the kids would prefer that) with melba toast. Just get a loaf of thick sliced bread, toast on each side and whilst still hot slice through the middle to make two slices. Place these on a baking tray, cut side up, in a low oven to crisp up. I usually do this before I put my goose in the oven, then when the melba toast is cool put it in an airtight tin or box until dinner time.
classic prawn cocktail
vol au vents
pizza fingers
salmon/cheese on bread rolls or crackers
cheese twists/pin wheels
my husband makes tiny cheese and onion scones (slightly bigger than a cherry tomato) and we freeze them. on christmas day we take them out, split them in half and spread them with cream cheese or hummus and put a small slice of olive, or a bit of smoked salmon, or a bit of onion marmalade or fancy chutney, or a prawn, on top. we have a couple of large plates of these, handed round with the bucks fizz, before we sit down for dinner. only ever did a sit down starter once and it wasn't worth the effort. these little scones are really tasty and go down a treat. you could just put butter on some of them for any fussy eaters. they always make our family go mmmmmmmm....
Cold sliced duck in mixed leaves with sweet chilli sauce is lovely.
