Just eating an apple that was grown in a colleagues garden and trying to work out what kind of apple it is. The sunny side is a wonderful redish crimson, moving into pink and yellow on the shaded side and the pips are white. It has a very sweet taste after the initial sharpness. Does any body have any idea what it might be? Additionally, it was picked yesterday and is ripe and grown in Edinburgh though with the climate we've had this year that's probably not going to help classify it!
Thanks.

Also where the skin had been red, the underneath was very pink which made me think it was possibly a pink lady but I'm not sure if they do actually exist or not.
Hi Skreech. I've just had a fruitless (pardon the pun) half hour looking through all Mr O's gardening books for you. I guess it could be a pink lady but the only ones I've ever seen (in Tesco's) have had a uniformly coloured exterior. Whatever it is, it sounds delicious.

I feel so indebted to you for spending the time to research it for me! It certainly was delicious though and I forgot to mention the stalk was unusually chunky too! Thanks for your reply!
Hi S - get on to the nice people at Brogdale and they should be able to help - you can send them a picture of the tree - include the leaves and the fruit etc, and see if they have anything similar / know the variety. http://www.brogdale.org.uk/

There are 2500 varities in the UK plus apples can 'interbreed' so you may even be eating a unique fruit...thats how Bramleys came about....

And come along to Edinburgh Farmers' Market on Saturday (Castle Terrace, 9 - 2) - we have a Guinness World Record attempt at making the worlds' biggest bowl of porridge..........and you can get loads of good fresh seasonal stuff too of course....including a nice bag of freshly cooked real potato crisps from The Crisp Hut..

HI Nickmo, cheers for the advice! I've been meaning to go to the farmers market since I moved here but I'm afraid I'm working at a festival this weekend so I'll miss the giant porridge! Will it be sweet or salted btw?
Will your colleague not know? Seeing as they're his apples?
Question Author
Hi BOO, she doesn't know as the tree has been there since before they bought the house!
Hi S - no idea re make up of the porridge - only know there will be a lot of it for the crowd to enjoy - tell anyone you know who fancies coming along to bring a spoon......

And the market is on every Saturday throughout the year, so no more excuses!...
