Walkers are owned by Pepsico. They bought Smiths and weeded out the range, and also bought over Golden Wonder (incidentally, Golden Wonder variety potato was developed in 1936 or '37 - way before the crisps)

Taytos now own the GW name.
But Walkers are still the bestest!!! I can see their chimney smoke from where I'm sitting.

Smith's, as Bazmoore says. But the square crips were withdrawn because they contained silica to make them crunchier and this was considered harmful. In fact they were so crispy/crunchy you could imagine they were a bit like eating lightbulbs.

Golden Wonder crisps were so named simply because that was the variety of potato originally used to make them. The name also seemed appropriate for the look and taste of the finished product. Things changed when the original owners were bought out, and they never tasted as good afterwards.
