Hi, I stupidly left a pan on and forgot about it and now it is completely black (plus the house smells horrible!) Any tips on how to clean the pan easily? I have left it to soak but see hours of scrubbing ahead of me unless any of you habe any good tips? Thanks.

Fill the pan with boiling water, and put some Steredent tablets in, then let it stand overnight, I've never used them for this, but it should work.
A bit late now but if it happens again (it will!) plunge the saucepan straight into a sinkful of cold water. (No water inside the pan yet)

After a few minutes, empty that water out and put the saucepan into more cold water. This loosens the burnt bits inside.

Scrape out the bits that lift easily with a wooden spoon and leave to soak for a few hours.

Should clean up quite easily then.
hi emoire, my mum says soak vinegar in it... i say, chuck it and buy new pan! :0)
Trash it
buy some rhubarb and boil it in the pan you burnt it should bring it up like new

Vinegar is good at taking away the smell.

Woke up this morning and the awful burnt smell is still there so will give the vinegar tip a try! Thanks to everyone that replied.
Try soaking in a solution of bio washing powder or liquid (for washing clothes) it helps to break down the burnt bits
Tip a can of Coke into it...
Washing powder - leave it to soak overnight. Works treat. Also, washing powder is great for cleaning stainless steel sinks! I use it everytime!
vinigar is good but i put coke into the pan and then boil it for a while! good luck!
i use washing powder if it isn't too bad BUT rhubarb suggestion works an absolute treat for really bad stuff... good luck - and don't eat the rhubarb afterwards :)
It will depend partly on what the pan is made of;if it's non-stick, I'd be inclined to junk it, because whatever you do to it it will never be the same again. If it's stainless steel (all mine are, and I wouldn't use anything else) repeated soaking and scrubbing will eventually bring it back as good as new. If I burn stuff in a pan I cover the burnt areas with boiling water and a generous squirt of washing-up liquid, leave it for half an hour or so and give it a good scrub with a scourer/sponge. I generally find 3 or so repetitions of this treatment works wonders. If it's aluminium it was only fit for the scrapheap from the start!
Have you tried that new Fairy actice foam thing that Ainsley Harriet advertises? I have and it brought some of my really burnt on oven trays up great.
*active*

I usually put a drop of washing up liquid in the pan along with a bit of vinegar half fill with water, bring to boil then simmer for about half an hour, should then be quite easy to remove. If not, throw away!
