Fry some onions in a little oil, add potatoes, carrots, whatever root vegetables you have, pour on water, boil, add salt and pepper and just leave it. Probably costs about 1 all together. If you use meat, fry it first until its brown then add the vegetables
Ditto above and go to your butcher and ask for beef skirt (no joke). The most tender meat you can buy and where I am its only 1.80 a pound. Its not always on the counter as they use it for their steak pies as well as for taking it home themselves.

Here's a nice easy recipe also adding beer and mustard with abit of herbs. http://www.greatbritishkitchen.co.uk/recipes_result.asp?name=traditionalbeefstew

Skirt is great for the stew as it has a nice bit of fat which adds to the thickening of the stew and should never be cut off.

It will melt into the stock, leaving the meat really tender. Supermarkets won't have this cut as they don't want you to do any cooking, but buy their ready made pap.

That recipe sounds delish nickmo and I forgot to mention dont cut the fat off.It is the most under-rated beef - shoudl have kept it to ourselves cos the price will go up.Going to try that recipe at the weekend:)

cheers everyone much appreciated>>>>trowts123
It doesn't have to be minced meat to have cheap meat. If you buy pieces of stewing lamp or oxtail, brown them first on the bone and then cook slowly in a casserole with vegetables. These are also low cost delicious meals and the goodness from the bones will seep into the meat juices. . Don't cut the fat off first as this makes the meat tender. If you cook the previous day and allow to cool, the fat will solidify on the surface and can easily be scraped off before reheating. I think these "peasant type" dishes are some of the most delicious types of comfort food you can get during the cold winter months and those individuals who live on pre-prepared processed foods don't know what they're missing !
