Just made a shepherd's pie for son, shoved it in the freezer for him to take back to his place when I suddenly wondered whether an enamel plate was suitable for a microwave. I don't own one and cannot find anything on google, so please would you tell me if I've made a giant boob - or that is is ok? Thank you.

No - an enamel plate is made of metal and food on it will not heat properly in a microwave.

He should move it onto a more suitable plate before reheating.

Many thanks dzug. I will now attempt to remove the frozen lump to another dish - and hope I have the correct type.

Anything metal in a microwave should cause arc-ing which for the couple of seconds there is a mini fireworks style display is very pretty but it would' jigger' the microwave.

An ordinary plate where the transfer is under the plates glaze is usually ok... nothing with a metal stripe around the edge is any use,'cos it too arcs. most modern plates will have whether they are good to micro or dishwash stamped or written on the bottom .

That's just the problem sense4all, they don't have this on the bottom of all plates. If only manufacturers would do this life would be a whole lot simpler. I've transerred the pie into a Pyrex dish now, so I hope that's safe.
I use pyrex'' bowls and jugs all the time in my super duper powered microwave without any trouble..The reason I have a new micro is because one of the sense juniors put a plate with a lovely metallic overlay in the old one,as the python boys would say it became an ex-microwavet(he plate bit the dust too).Sense junior was fine.

I'm glad junior survived intact sense, but it did remind me of that Bobby Davro skit on the Rainbow programme when he said Let's put Bungle in the microwave...

One day I shall defintitely have one. All those lovely buttons to play with - what joy!
