Is it usual to tip the driver?

If I was getting an Indian or Chinese meal I'd tip the delivery man a couple of quid.

I have at least one delivery every week and never tip.  They are all lovely and helpful and appreciate my outside loo

Depending on which supermarket you shop with, some ask if you would like to leave a tip for your driver when you pay at checkout online. I know it's not a supermarket but I know that Deliveroo does.

What supermarket does that, Smow?

Uber does the same when I use their taxis

It's not usual, but it's your prerogative if you wish to do it.

I'm just trying to remember Barry - I know it was one that I had to use in the last year for some reason, I'll try and find out who it was.

Deliveroo and Uber are all self-employed, different kettle of fish altogether.

This was Tesco on Twitter:

Tesco

Morning. I understand why you may want to tip our drivers especially now but I'm afraid this is against company policy as our drivers aren't allowed to accept tips or gifts from our customers. Ty - Karen

One of those anomalies. Like you, Sandy, I tip takeaway delivery men but not the supermarket one.

I've never had a takeaway delivery. Is it the norm to tip them?

Personally I always tip delivery drivers. The exception being post office delivery. To my mind, it acknowledges their efforts , and shows my appreciation.

Do you use supermarket delivery service, david?

Not with Tesco Sainsbury's or Asda but yes with Uber and deliveroo

God knows who I used that offered a tip leaving service - maybe it was a smaller supermarket round here. It's going to drive me mad now till I remember! But yes Deliveroo and Uber definitely do.

When it was December I had a huge tub of things like chocolate wafers etc and on the lead up to  Xmas no matter who knocked - food delivery, Amazon, anyone, I would always offer the driver the tub to pick a sweet treat. 99% of them smiled and took something lol.

No barry1010. I have never had a supermarket delivery.

Many other deliveries from numerous places.

Having myself delivered Coal, Carpets, Bread, not at the same time of course. I appreciated the very occasional gratuity.

The question is about supermarket deliveries, david, so I'm pleased that you clarified that you don't tip them.

When we used to get supermarket home delivery a long time ago, it didn't even cross my mind to tip the delivery person.

Same with the very rare takeaway delivery we've occasionally had, just not something I'd do.

Really cold or really hot days ,  and when its pouring down. The days when I would have used a taxi.  On really hot days I also offer a cold drink while I unpack....

Forgot, one delivery included two big bags of potting compost. The driver had never delivered it to a flat fefore, I showed him my  balcony, he went home with tomato, pepper, and cucumber plants for his daughter who he was teaching to garden.  Next time he showed me photos of a very muddy, but very happy little girl.  Little things make you smile

I've often wondered when the Tesco delivery person sometimes hangs about for a while talking to me if they are waiting for a tip, so I'm glad Barry posted @ 7 am to say it's against their policy.

Don't feel guilty now. Thanks Barry.

The supermarket delivery people carry all my shopping up a flight of 7 stairs to my kitchen for me.  I couldn't easily do this so I always tip them. Occasionally people refuse but not often.

I use taxis a lot and always tip them too.
