I get if you were tipped, you'd happily accept it.
I 'bet...
"most likely make your own decisions about what to charge. "

Yeah I could try charge you £50 to cut ur lawn but I think you'd go with ted down the road who'll do it for £5 a week.
You'd be stupid not to accept it?

I have no problem with those who tip. They have a problem with those who don't (it seems) .
The poor girl in Tescos probably makes a better wage. They certainly do at aldis.
But...we are talking about restaurant tipping.
I'm sure the restaurants and waiters would rather people just not go to their establishments if they won't tip... .hat's a real feasible way to run UK business! I think some users need to get over themselves lol.
I think we have a problem with your problem with those who may rely on tips to top up crappy wages.
No one in the UK relies on tips.

Even if they did it's not up to me, the consumer, who is already giving them money (indirectly) to give them more money but directly. How obscured to suggest in any way that I may be to blame for such poor employment scenarios.
Your comparisons are farcical TD, the girl at Tesco etc isn’t allowed a tip, they work with money so how would they prove having it on them?
I tip postman at Xmas for giving me good service all year round, I tip my gardener about October ( last cut) for same, I always tip my hairdresser every time I go
Why? Because I appreciate the service they provide me
"the girl at Tesco etc isn’t allowed a tip, they work with money so how would they prove having it on them?"

By counting the money in the till, as they do, after every shift?

How good for you. You must sleep really well at night.
I guess the answer to the OP is its a personal choice and one should never feel guilty if you don't. Its not about the cost of the meal either, I've tipped servers in a greasy spoon but not in a high class establishment -and moreover vice versa . I don't tip normally but will if the server has gone out of their way to help. I will NOT pay a set service charge.
Devil you are on a roll today but get your facts right -Checkout staff do not count up the till after their shift! LOL!
thedevil I actually do tip workmen over and above the agreed price if they do a good job and are generally cheerful and helpful.
When did I say they did? Every till gets counted by someone. In fact, with computers the tills total is constantly known.

You're malice should back off.
Devil wind it in love, have a coffee and a hob nob.x
Can I just say having worked in retail, an ‘over’ till at the end of a shift is as bad as an ‘under’ till , both are subject to a disciplinary...
But we aren’t talking shop ,at least I wasn’t , your choice to be what you are as Aunt Polly says...
And yes, I do sleep very well at night
"The poor girl in Tescos probably makes a better wage."

Barely.

Average hourly rate between £7 and £7.50.

Woofgang, that's really nice. We have a building firm and often after a job the client will bring a box of beer over for the Lads and one gave all the laborers £50 after they came in on a Sunday to finish the job. Tips are appreciated by those that don't expect them!
Desksiary -that's below minimum wage
//Out of curiosity, I googled food server salaries in the US...
As low as $2 per hour. Speechless.//

This is what they use to justify blackmailing people into leaving tips rather than sorting out their employment rules and charging an appropriate amount instead of conning customers.
I recall a post by an American on another site who said he left 20% for good service, 15% for OK service but if the service was poor he only left 10%! That'll teach them to be better at their job, still getting 10%.
We go to the US a lot and always tip but would rather pay an honest amount for the service and reward above and beyond service.
