Nothing Springs to mind, Summer in daily use and others Fall by the wayside.

Or

Seasoning is done progressively so as not to overdo the salt or pepper where herbs are generally in whatever's cooking from beginning to end.

Pepper is a spice.
........and I found this too:

When the Gauls found that some food tastes could be improved through aging or the passing of the seasons, they called it saisonner. After being conquered by the Normans in 1066, the British called the new aging process “seasoning.” With the introduction of Middle Eastern spices from returning Crusaders in the thirteenth century, seasoning took on the meaning of anything that embellishes the taste of food.
Not an expert but that rings true for me. One seasons one thing with something else: whatever you use is "seasoning". Commonly salt and/or pepper but not necessarily so. Herbs/spices are defined food types.
