Dog Eating

Due to building work being done in the house, the dog's food and water bowls have been brought into the living room. He has a very strange habit of taking a mouthful of dried food and dropping it 3-4 feet away from his bowl, he then proceeds to pick a couple of bits out to eat and leaves the rest. I just though he was a messy sod whilst his food was in the kitchen but he has probably been doing this for years.

Any idea why he does this? It's driving me bonkers.

So all he gets is dried food all the time ?
I know cats prefer shallow dishes, perhaps the bowl is slightly too deep so he moves it away to a flatter surface? I wonder what he would do if you served his dinner on a shallow plate - would be interesting to find out...?

Most of the time chap, yes.
Poor thing !

Hmmm, that would be easy to give a try Peas. I'll do it today to see if it makes a difference.
Try giving him something else to eat as well !
Good luck with that Rocky, hope it helps x
Why are you giving him a kiss, the poor thing only gets the same boring food all the time ...
Chap, my dog is also on dry food for his meals - he is in the best health I have ever seen and it has no added colours or preservatives.
Some dogs stomachs simply don't agree with wet/ tinned/ raw food/ plain meat.
He has treats and pigs ears, so he has some variety.
You could check here to see how good the food is that you are feeding him. He sounds a right character.

Chap, why don't you bore off any annoy someone else.
Question Author
Thanks Ladybirder, I'll have a look at that later.
Of course he likes meat...its instinctive. Maybe you should switch to a raw food diet..RATTER knows about that.

I did look into it a while ago and if my memory serves me well, it wasn't easy.
The spaniel here walks around all day with his bowl in his mouth, as if he is a reincarnated Buddhist monk looking for alms......
..and does he get any DT?
RR I've just got a 9year old rescue dog - always fed kibble - changed him to raw diet - he loves it and is doing well on it. It does take a bit of organising but isn't as difficult as it first seems (and you can teach an old dog new tricks!) -any and all bones fed must be given raw - start him off with chicken neck or wings and avoid big weight bearing bones from heavy animals, too tough and might break his teeth. Check out the BARK diet - give your dog a bone by Dr. Ian Billinghurst.
Typo - should read The Barf diet by Dr Ian Billingurst. Think it stands for Biologically acceptable raw food.

Do they need the bones? He gets very bad diarrhoea if he has them
were they raw or cooked?
