And some others. Milk. I like a bargain as much as the next person but don't want our dairy farmers to go out of business.

Tesco at least is carrying the loss of their cheap milk

Please ignore. I didn't realise this article is 18 months old and I don't know the current facts.

Two and a half years old, actually
I agree, in fact they all ought to put the price of milk up. It's ridiculously cheap considering what goes into producing it. I also heard it discussed on R4 this morning.
Well hc it was on R4 just this morning. Milk is cheaper than bottled water at some supermarkets.
I have my milk delivered. Hoping to keep a few more people in work.
So do I daisy, it costs more and sometimes it's a bit unreliable but I'm helping to support a local farm.

Yes, I agree, Prudie. I emailed Tesco head office some months ago when they started selling their 4 pints of milk for £1 and asked them who was bearing the loss - Tesco or the farmer.

I had the sort of answer that suggested Tesco is bearing the cost but left me doubtful. In fact I will email them again next week.

I agree, Methyl. Although some dairy farmers were in favour and it is easy to judge in hindsight.

The dairy farming scandal should be stopped tomorrow, I would gladly pay double
Prudie, my milk delivery is never unreliable and I am grateful for it. Only too happy to pay more for the privilege.
Me too, Talbot.

I wish I could find a website that gives the supermarket prices of common groceries over the last 40 years. I am convinced milk is as cheap today as it was in the 1970s, when it was bought in a pint glass bottle either from the corner shop or from the milkman.

Has anyone firm memories of this?

Iceland sell 4 pints for a £1 ans six pints for nearly £2. Figure if you will. When milk was 8d per pint beer was 2s per pint. had they kept pace milk would now be at least £1 per pint.

Wouldn't touch Tesco with a bargepole, hate their practices. However, I do believe farmers need to get a fair price for their milk. What will happen if they all go out of business?

I don't care if supermarkets make no profit on milk, bread and other essentials. I was astonished that Tesco was selling a bag of sugar for 79p at Christmas when it was 20p more before without blowing their trumpets.

If they are prepared to carry the loss to attract customers that is fine by me.
It is difficult to compare prices with the past because technology and mass production have reduced costs. I remember at the age of 5 my mother sent me to the corner shop to by a loaf of bread and gave me 6d. When I got to the shop the lady told me that it had gone up to 7d so I had to trudge all the way home to ask for another 1d. Ee, life were hard in them days!

I also remember our first TV in 1956. It cost £80 and was paid for on the never never. £80 was about 2 months of my father's wages.

Last bought a bag of sugar over two years ago.
