Do you know where Fray Bentos is?
If they weren't sealed in a can they probably would go off before they got to the UK from Uruguay. They used to be lovely, but not so much these days.

In the supermarket I was going to say but then I had a think and am pretty sure it comes from Uraguay especially after reading blackadders reply, chortle

Was their best export a pie? and in a can? Was this some kind of joke which caught on?
Domestic fridges are a relatively new invention. (My parents didn't have one until I was well into my teens). Before they were around other means of food preservation were used, with canning being particularly popular. So it's unsurprising that someone thought of putting pies into cans.

Who eats them? Well I've got a few in the cupboard as 'standby meals'. When bought at full price (of well over £2) they're not particularly good value but they're frequently sold in pound shops (for a somewhat obvious price) and, with the addition of a buttered jacket potato (or, for economy, a bit of instant mash) they provide a cheap & filling meal.
I think I bought one not long after I got married in 1975. Wasn't impressed then, I don't think.
We love them. We take them on holiday in the caravan and cook them in our halogen oven. Wonderful.
The Pampas grasslands of Argentina and Uruguay produce very fine beef which was also brought chilled to U.K. Possibly cheaper meat is put into these products now. The cleared Amazon rainforest is a source of some of this beef which is why some people refuse to buy it

You know what buenchico it's rare that I take advice from strangers on the internet but I have a warm and fuzzy feeling from your auro which tells me you're protected by angels so i am going straight to the poundshop at 9am tomorrow to have me a fray bentos pie and if it's okay then i too will stock some in my cupboard in case of a nuclear war/asteroid hit/zombie-rage virus attack so thank you kind sir for your recommendation
These pies have been around for years. I can remember buying them in the 60s. They were much better quality then than the ones being sold today.

Are the crusts soggy and do they come in many different and mouthwatering flavours?
The amount of meat actually put into them seems to have shrunk drastically, lots of sloppy gravy and fatty pastry

Quite right, Jamesnan, that's why I no longer buy. You can get them for under a quid these days, but they are not the same.

Sounds like lovely after pub food jamesnan. I would if it would be a good seller if you wrapped it in a pitta bread and had chilli sauce all over it or ditch the pitta and cover it in thick slices of kebab meat!

my mum always cooked them in oven yrs ago, and they always turned out very tassty and lovely and crispy. I may even try one one day soon now you've mentioned it.

Thrift store, 99 cents stores, dollar stores, pound shops, the rupee mart, the shekel stand they're all the same wherever you go gness
Don't think there are may shekel stands in Tehran.
