Do you? Cross your sprouts?

I always do but read that there's no need to, so why do we cut a cross in them?

Lol maydup .I bought brussels tops at the market in Beccles yesterday .We've just had them with our dinner .
I nearly shed tears watching Supermarket Secrets the other night .They were just lopping the tops off and leaving them in the fields .I know they go to feed cattle but they are so tasty .
Morrisons try to pass them off as small cabbages and want a couple of quid for two little tops ,whereas I bought a kilo yesterday for a quid .
Petal, parsnips, swedes and turnips, I can see why you might call them the devil's food, they are sooo tempting. I must see if we have a haggis in the freezer. Scrumptious!!!!!
I thought it was obvious why you cross sprouts - the stalk bit is clearly tougher than the leafy bit so to get the whole thing evenly cooked you nick the stalk to give a bigger surface area for the heat to reach.
My sprouts will be left whole and un-crossed.

They will be roasted with shallots and thyme and finished with a squeeze of lemon juice and some seasoning.
mmmm that sounds nice

i love them steamed with oyster sauce

Ours have been on since early August, no cross, think they'll be ok!
I thought we crossed sprouts to let the devil out of them.....☻
You're going for al dente this year Baldric?
You are so lucky, my mater puts them on in April, Baldric......
i'm going to tell her indoors that my sprouts haven't been crossed, just to see her reaction ...
