Some are better than others. With chain pubs, you get what you pay for. An independent pub can be hit or miss which is ok if there are two of you, but not ok when you have a family.

It varies. Some privately owned country ones are very good. The chains are more of a "know it'll be at least an adequate standard" thing. The issue that is getting more annoying is when one goes to a pub and is confronted with a restaurant view, with the feeling you might not be allowed to sit down unless you order food, because it is all placemats and cutlery and menus and stuff. Offering good food is an asset, driving folk away because they are not comfortable supping a pint with friends, is a great loss to the community.

A good pub that serves both good food and good beer will become popular very quickly through word of mouth. If the standard ever drops, it will go down hill like a stone.
We've had several country pubs round our way that have done nothing for years....poor grub and constant change of owners, and then all of a sudden, someone gets it right and hits the jackpot.

We eat out most weeks at country pubs, we usually find them very good for the price. A few are over priced but we generally get a very good Sunday roast with desert and a pint of ale and an Irish coffee for 2 for about £30.
