I am going to make a pie tonight to use up the meat and veg. left over from yesterday. I want to cook it on an enamel plate and put pastry underneath and on top.

Do I need to blind bake the base before adding the meat and veg mash or will it be o.k. to make it all in one go and bung it in the oven.

This is something my mum used to do but she's not around for me to get the details.

Pie is completely bleurghhhh to me.

I just don't understand the need to encase a perfectly good casserole in pastry!

So you are right Tilly, there is no need to save me a slice!
Doh.
In Canada we used to get invited to Pie Parties...Pie starter...Pie Main and Pie Pudding......pies are nice but you can get sick of them...not to mention indigestion.... ☻
Mrs, jom made some Cornish pasties yesterday with the traditional ingredients. I had to be honest and tell her it was not the worst one I've ever had, it was the best. It wasn't baked blind but then the ingredients are not running in gravy. You could bake your pie with dry contents until the pastry is cooked then hot pour gravy/sauce in through a hole in the top then finish the baking.

Eccles, if there was enough casserole left for another meal then we would have that.
However, there is not enough for two, so it's going in a pie which will be big enough for everybody who wants a piece.
Here in France pies are unheard of, they have 'things' and 'stuff' 'en croute' but they ain't pies, nowhere like.

Shoota, we always did that recipe on baking day with the pastry remains, but we called it 'Flat cake' not sad cake.

Hhhmmmm, I might dislike pies but I could happily tuck into a pastie!
Yes ma'am, baking day always resulted in sad cake slathered wi butter and a mug of hot tea.

(Nice to see your, er, elbows back....)
Just out of interest what is wrong with lard?

And if you don't use lard or butter how do you make pastry?
Shoota, ta - they needed an airing again.

I don't make pastry, Eccles. I buy Jus Rol. My pastry always turns out badly so I don't bother.
