Not a food use, but a highly effective contraceptive if one partner 'loves' it and the other 'hates' it - never reach kissing distance, let alone anything else!

I would love to try this marmite thing - cos I like bovril. But I don't want to pay for a jar of the stuff to throw it out if I don't like it. I throw enough stuff out.

In stews? thats interesting. They sell baby jars to try connemmara.

originally I don't think it was made as a spread. I use it to enrich stews and soup, as a rub on beef before you put it to roast, and a small amount in with mushrooms when you braise them is a healthy alternative to butter.

loulou111 marmite really brings out the taste of mushrooms. put a small amount of water or stock in a pan add your mushrooms sliced quarters or whole, bring to a boil -at this point the water will start to come out of the mushrooms -at this point add 1 level teaspoon or less of marmite stir and cook until the water has evaporated -no need for salt but you can add a bit of pepper -hardly any calories. You can also add marmite to homemade mushroom soup.

Another recipe - sauté onions carrots and celery in a little butter, add a can of cooked green lentils and a teaspoon of marmite stir well -top with cheesy mash for a veggie cottage pie.

I love it on toast but I also use it in gravy and anything that might benefit from that umami flavour

I think it an acquired taste. One ought not try it once and sling the pot out. And spread it ultra thinly until you get used the the wonderful unsubtle burst of flavour.
