Why, when the sun comes out does half the population decide they want to cook lunch outside, with all the hassle and cleaning up afterwards that comes with it? Why not just cook some food in the kitchen and bring it outside? So much easier and simpler.

I was going to say that it's a 'man' thing, but the daughter loves her barbecues. Personally I'd rather cook indoors and serve outside, with copious amounts of cold drinks.
I'm with the cook indoors and eat out brigade.
My local butcher's shop was heaving with men of a certain age on Saturday. (Buying for barbecues, I know that as when each was served, they mentioned it)
I love the smell of the BBQ, only buy disposable ones then just chuck it away.

cant see the point if youre just in your garden, but on a beach or park or somewhere there is no other way...
I agree with Craft. The minute the sun comes out though Mr BM (whose cooking repertoire extends to about 3 dishes) insists on barbequeing. Of course, I have to prepare the food, marinade it, prepare the salad and then HE cooks the meat and is terribly self congratulatory.

It's a man/hunter/gatherer thing I think. "we bring fire to woman".
I like BBQ'd food.
I've never 'got' barbecues.
What hassle, what mess?
well done the food tastes so good though.... we had a buildt in one at my last home and we used it a lot but it was a lot easier to cook on than the metal ones as we had lots of different levels and could pick loads of fresh herbs to flavour the smoke
coz its the men & youngsters chance to use their new gadgets; their guts are stronger for under-cooked foods.
ITs the only time my husband cooks so bring it on
The Women love it, so they can get out of cooking !.
oooh I miss having a garden just had a lovely memory of bbq lamb steaks with rosemary in the smoke mini jacket spuds and salad...
I hate bbqs especially in tiny gardens where the neighbours are forced to close all the windows to stop the curtains reeking of smoke for weeks.

On the beach, in a field, fine. Just not immediately next to my windows please
Rowan, could you not use one of the disposable B B Q's on your balcony ?.

I have a gas BBQ and it is probably less mess than cooking it indoors.

I agree if you have a coal BBQ as you have to light the coals, get them up to heat, and then because of the uneven flame a lot of the food gets burned.

But my gas BBQ has an even flame, takes a minute or so to get up to heat, and I can put a lot more on it than on my grill.

Plus standing out side cooking in the sun is lovely.
I love BBQs.
