Very Yellow Eggs

Well, as discussed recently, Mums (along with a few ABers) got some chickens.

Whenever I go round, they are trotting happily around the lawn ...

(do chickens "trot"?)

... or somewhere in the bushes.

Anyway ... I have a few of the eggs ... and the yolks are SO yellow !!

Like really dark yellow. Almost orange, actually.

Why is this??

And did any ABers get their chickens?

ps. Have you ever seen the size of chicken poo !!!!!!!!!

Because they are fresh and organic and not bought in an Asda having come from some grotty battery farm

Well, yes ... but I wonder why that makes them a darker yellow.

my eggs are bought in asda but definately don't come from some nasty battery farm.
they look more appetising don't they JJ, when they're a deep yellow? i've no idea why they're that colour though. maybe what they're fed on?
and yes, i have seen the size of chicken poo, phenomenal!

Cos you are not a good farm girl Jayne, a city dweller.......and not used to really fresh eggs (Ours here come from the farm next door, down a 600m track from the road).

Fresh eggs have darker colored yolks and whites than old eggs. The bright color of the egg yolk fades as the egg ages - partly because of extra oxygen getting in the shell. A pale yellow yolk and watery white mean that the egg has been sitting in storage for several weeks, or months.

Yes, the poo ... I thought it must be a fox, or one of those little chubby deer things.

yes as to carotenes dictating the colour, and yes the colour deteriorates with age as the carotene oxidises....the main thing be O2
