My family and I are going to New York for 5 days soon to sight-see. We all have machine readable passports and are British citizens but does anybody know if we need visas? I live in the UK. Thanks.

It sounds as though you will qualify for the visa waiver scheme.  You just have to fill in the forms which they will give you on the plane.
If you are travelling with british passports you will qualify for the visa waiver.
