Can anyone tell me why some potatoes, when cooked, have an 'earthy' taste & is there a remedy (not lots of salt)?  Being a potato fan it spoils the whole dinner for me if they aren't nice.

Are you sure you've washed them properly ?

But seriously, how about flavouring them with plenty of herbs or spices and roasting them. I suggest rosemary and thyme or maybe a little cajun seasoning. If roasties are not your thing, how about finishing them off in some cream and garlic and plenty of cracked black pepper.

However if you want just plain boiled spuds, stick to new potatoes. (diffent potatoes have better uses, Mashing, Roasting,etc...)

Oh yes fennster - scrubbed until they shine!!

I do love roasties & herbs etc but sometimes you just want good old plain mash with your dinner & I wondered whether adding something to the water might help.  Thanks!

What variety is it? There are great differences between potatoes and you need to buying the appropriate type for the purpose and for the taste

Thanks Pinotage - having a choice would be lovely but unfortunately  the fresh produce in the local shops is rather limited.  (Recent variety has been Estima).

I'll have to go back to growing my own!
