The word is French and comes from the verb 'rago�ter', meaning to restore the appetite. Presumably, the original French cooks of this meat and vegetable stew imagined it to have such 'medicinal' qualities. 
Any stew with a thick, rich gravy. You can see QM's point about its restorative qualities, therefore!
