Is CB registration the answer?

Could having to register to use Chatterbank (in additional to being registered on the general site) be a possible answer to getting rid of trolls?

If people had to register with only one username per IP address allowed and a report function which means users can have any troublemakers banned until the Ed can check and consider their posts and see if they should be let in or not hence getting rid of people banning for no decent reason?

I'm sure genuine users wouldn't mind being locked out for a day or so if it meant CB could get back to a decent chat place?

I'm sure that some will still slip through the net but it may make dealing with things easier.

Could that work?

The thing is Jenna is that the trouble will just spill out into other categories, as it already has before (& still is).
The only problem with trolls are the people who are feeding them, some obviously thrive on the arguments & nastiness.
What this site needs is better monitoring, especially at weekends.
It's not only trolls who are the problem. It's a very sad day on AB when we have an established user who posts thread after thread with the link to a porn video in it.
I love this site but I have lost ALL respect for it. There is no editorial control, and it is merely a free-for-all. It will be taken over by drunks and vile mouths, but there is nothing can be done about it. Just try to make it as difficult as possible for them. Agitate them before you go to bed, that sort of thing.

Most ISPs provide their customers with dynamic IP addresses, which are allocated whenever a user connects to the internet. To change their IP address, all that someone needs to do is disconnect from the internet and then reconnect.

Even if someone has a static IP address, there are plenty of free proxy servers available (either directly or using the Tor project) which can be used to mask that address.

So any registration or banning system, which is dependent upon IP address recognition, simply won't work.

Chris
IP banning is a non-starter. If it were me, I would be ultimately fair and ban anybody who even vaguely looked like noguts or legoland. In noguts case it would be a matter of public hygiene, in legoland's just a mercy killing.
Hear Hear Whiff................but, Buenchico.........is there not a way for the AB software to "interrogate" a PC, or, better still, the ISP. Could that nail the user?

Thanks for explaining that Chris :)

I don't know what the answer is then save for more decent moderation by the people who run the site.
Don't know what the answer is but as in real life don't rise to their bait-just chat amongst youselves and ignore them - trolls and their like hate to be ignored!
true B00, I did think of that after I'd posted...

exactly scotgal, but sadly some just find it impossible
I prefer poking their bums.
Im not up on Techie stuff and personal insults and slander are water off a ducks back -but i have to agree with Whiffey -agitate them and then go to bed -then get up in the morning -sit and have your hot chocolate and watch the bloodbath from the night before.

Its cool -its a circus side show -I even looked back at last nights drivel and thought -I was thrown into the lions den -but they dont have teeth so I sniggered.

They will always find a way around it Jenna -prob best allocating the time legend awakens from his slumber -9pm ish until say 2.50am ish to him and his gang -then we can get back to normal -as normal is lol -during the day and early evening.

Methinks that Knobbys porn will have an adverse affect on the whole site in general tho -a bridge too far -shame as i have made really good friends on here.

True what they say -when the drinks in the wits out -unfortunately the drink would appear to be always in (:
Sad old bint who are you going to turn on next then and porn on here I have not seen any can in the words of noddy can you prove that and post a link.
No I dont think so.
pot kettle black?
Well noguts, I am still waiting for your link about the other matter.

Are you in the public bar tonight?
would it be possible, say, to block access from (and I'm just hypothesising) certain Spanish islands? <casts wary look in direction of Ibiza>
I'm not sure on all the techy stuff but I know it's been asked before and those who do understand the techy bit say it's not really possible.

I also don't advocate getting rid of CB as I love other topics on here and I would hate to see CB crap spill over in to those.

I genuinely think ignoring the people you think are plonkers is the best policy and if you feel that you are seriously being harrassed and bullied to make a note of it and report it to the relevant people. I believe there are laws against this sort of thing.

As with anything, cut out the thrill and boredom will still strike. I'm afraid for attention seekers, any kind of attenton, even bum prodding, is giving in to them.
The answer has to be better regulation. The owners of the site must be making shed-loads of money from its usage and advertising. If they recognise the intrinsic value of the site they are simply going to have to invest more resources in monitoring. If that means paying someone at weekewnds to moderate then sobeit to kick people off in real-time - not a week later when someone gets around to it.
A failure to do this will ultimately lead to a failure of the site through lack of interest. Result - no value to the owners. It is in their interests.

I'm sure it wouldn't cost much to have one person at a time sit and monitor the site at all times especially with the advertising income.

I'm sure the sponsers wouldn't be very impressed at some of the content on a site they're advertising on, especially family friendly firms.

Another thread here to bring to the Ed's attention if they read this...

I've volunteered to do it Jenna, although these days on a npart basis as I love my new job... I figure I may as well get paid for being on here as not. Plus I think I'd get off on the power trip...
