Sounds like the tracking, might be wrong though, have you posted on motoring?

Wrong tracking or wrong toe-in/toe-out setting. Needs a visit to Kwik-Fit or similar. They will probably check it for free but will charge to adjust it. About 15 I guess. Phone around in advance to get the best price if money's that tight. These people seem to get away with what they can for little jobs like this.
Buildersmate is correct. Other causes can be worn bushes or linkages in the lower suspension, a distorted tyre or even a worn shock absorber, although buildersmate's suggestions should be checked first and are most likely. Running the tyre on the incorrect pressure can also cause this but usually results in inner and outer wear together. If the tracking is out, one cause can be hitting a kerb or mounting the pavement at speed. Gently does it and good luck.
If you are not a regular checker of tyre pressure then this can also be a factor.

My mothers car always wore out the front left tyre first and had numerous visits to car repair places to find out why, one day a mechanic said to her

'do you use multi-story car parks alot?'

My mum parks her car on the top floor for work every day, and sometimes drives home for lunch too. She spends half her time driving, turning right continuosly and going up and down slopes!

Some people also find that the front left tyre on their car wears quicker, simply because of driving round roundabouts too fast. A car with standard road suspension also seems to increase this problem, i think. Because the car "body rolls" more, so more weight is on the front left tyre.
