I have just been set free after serving 3 weeks punishment, my parents confined me to my room and my bedroom door was kept LOCKED with a key at all times, this is because I got caught shoplifting, I stole a small bottle of vodka so me and my friends could drink ( I am underage ) the shopkeeper called my parents and not the police, my parents said they don't want to see me go to jail so made my punishment as close to prison as possible I had to get up at 7am after a shower and breakfast I was locked back in my room for the rest of the day, I wasn't allowed ANY entertainment, NO tv NO phone etc, I was allowed 2 hours internet per day for good behavouir.
each day I had to write a 6 page essay, lights out and bed 9pm, it was a HORRIBLE punishment I was so so miserable I have lost 3 weeks of my school holiday.
my parents said a severe punishment is necessary to deter me from offending again
is this fair ?

WEll folks, she obviously has not learnt anything so the punishment has well and truly FAILED. If she had been made to apologize, pay back the shop owner through hard work, been shown either in real life or on line what drink can do to people and how small businesses are going under because of shoplifting then she may not have needed to come on here to moan!!

The question you won't answer is, have you learnt anything? Has it made you not want to steal again?

You are just bleeting on until you get someone to agree with you. If you think it's not fair, then carrying on stealing, next time you may end up in custody, then you will learn, life's not fair.
They were not in solitary though Spath - they were allowed up and to the breakfast room, to shower and again down for dinner - they were also allowed 2 hours internet a day, and they had access to windows and sunlight.
Ummmm she is a child for the purposes of sentencing in a Court of Law.

Yes, the punishment has well and truly failed; clearly it was not harsh enough.
Something tells me AL that she would have still been on here moaning about the hard work.
I am not sure how AuntLydia has arrived at a conclusion that the punishment has failed? Surely, such a view would only become valid in the event of a repeat of the behaviour?
yes quite possibly Rock Rose but at least she may have learned something along the way.

of course this could all be 'holiday coursework' for some student. If it is they have certainly got a lot of different opinions to get their teeth stuck into!
Flonska AuntLydia has come to that conclusion because the girl has showed no remorse. Remorse is a good indication a punishment has worked!
I know that, AL, but she's old enough to know better so the punishment fitted the crime.
BB, perhaps you could try to look at this experience from another angle.

In reality your parents' punishment to you was very apt. They have given you an insight into what life would be like in a prison (or penitentiary). You will still get to grow up and make your own decisions and mistakes, but at least you can make more informed choices now. Rather than doing things with no concept of the possible consequences, you can decide whether you are prepared to take the risk of commiting offences and getting caught and punished for them.

Yes your punishment was harsh, but wholly deserved.

Spath @ 12:10

WTAF? I sincerely hope a mod removes that post.

AL, I googled "shoplifting & juvenile crime BBC."
I note the age of criminal responsibility in England & Wales is 10. This person is 16 (first post),who steals vodka so she and her friends can get drunk. Hardly the action of a "child".

Sorry for what, though.

If she steals from an ASDA or Wal-Mart, chances are she'll be banned with...possibly...her pretty face posted publicly for all to see.
